DANIEL MATTHEWS, PH.D.

Dan Matthews, Ph.D., is past-president of the New Mexico Psychological Association and has been director of the UNM Department of Psychology Clinic for over 25 years. He currently serves as NMPA liaison to the Board of Psychologist Examiners (BoPE).  His primary professional activities are clinical supervision of doctoral students. His training was in child and family therapy and he worked at the master’s level at the NM Children’s Psychiatric Center (1978-1981) and with special education children in the schools of Belen, Socorro and Magdalena (1981-1984). At the doctoral level, he was a divorce mediator/evaluator at the Second Judicial Family Court Clinic (1984-1988; licensed as a psychologist during this time), serving as clinical director for about a year. Since graduate school, Dr. Matthews has had a particular interest in the interaction of psychology and the law. He was involved in drafting the joint custody and child support statutes and has participated in drafting two versions of child custody evaluation guidelines for the NM Board of Psychologist Examiners. From 1991-2000, he served as legislative chair or co-chair for the NM Psychological Association and was president of that organization in 1997 and again in 2014. Dr. Matthews has been actively involved in revisions of the BoPE rules on several occasions including serving as Chair of the Rules Committee for the BoPE.
